Leafing my family and friends was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Just going through security and knowing that we wouldn’t see each other again for 10 months was indescribable. I don’t even know how I got my feet moving at the airport because everything in me screamed not to go.

I had to go on three flights.
I started in Nürnberg and flew to Amsterdam. When I entered the plain I was so nervous that I walked right past my seat. Not very fun, because I had to walk back with all the other people entering the plane and giving me weird looks. The flight was not very long and before I knew it we were already in Amsterdam.
There I had a long waiting time. I also had a big problem. I wasn’t checked in on my flight yet. That meant I didn’t have a seat number. That’s why I went up to the counter at my gate and discussed my issue with the woman at the counter. She told me she couldn’t promise me a seat on this flight because my flight was overbooked. Now I stood there dumps trucked. The only thing left to do was waiting and hoping I still get a seat on this flight.
Luckily I got a seat and was already in the air on my way to Canada. I even tried to sleep on that eight-hour flight (spoiler: it didn’t work that well). As we neared the airport, it hit me for the first time that my life was about to change completely. The feeling I had in this moment was indescribable.

At the airport nobody of the other exchange students had the slightest idea where we had to go, so we just followed the signs. We had to pass through immigration. That was really scary. For a moment I even thought I had to go back to Germany because of the serious looks the officer gave me.
After, I still had about four hours to go until my flight to Halifax started so I made my first visit at Tim Hortons. I was so overwhelmed by menu and offers that I just took a plain black coffee.
Four hours and one hour delay later I boarded my plane. When I arrived it was already 9p.m (by that time, I had been traveling four about 24 hours and was completely exhausted).
Two nice women from NSISP greeted me there and took me to my hotel. They also told me that my roommate would arrive at 11.30p.m but she didn’t arrive until 1.30a.m. I said a quick hallo and went straight to bed.
The next day the time had finally come. My host father and my host sister picked me up from the hotel. We then made our way to my new home together. The drive there took about three hours. On the way we also made a stop at Tim Hortons where I drank my first „Double Double“. That is a coffee with two shots of cream and to packs of sugar.
We finally arrived home after three hours and my journey to Canada came to an end.
